Freestyle is the stroke of strokes! The one we all sorta know but don't really know and there's SOOOOO much to it!!
Applying some simple technique tweaks can wildly improve your stroke and develop power where you didn't know you could! Swimmers might COMPLETELY disagree with a couple of the things I suggest but it can't hurt to try some unusual approaches and see what they do!
Effective breathing in freestyle can make or break you during a race! Evacuating your air right before a breath obviously makes for a more effective breath and managing to keep your head in line with your spine while spinning on your side!
Most people don't consider the downstroke which creates the power you need for the stroke to get you across the pool. Keeping the downstroke in a straight line like you're tracing the long sides of a rectangle creates a strong stroke! The other consideration is the placement of your elbow! Don't let the elbow drop under your hand in the downstroke! If it does, you pull your back muscles out of the equation and compromise your stroke!
Building out from that is the simple tweak of keeping your head mostly underwater with your eyes pointed down will keep you as aerodynamic as possible in the water! Keep the chin tucked a little and keep your eyeballs on the markers at the bottom of the pool.
